We spent about 7 hours at the hotel and returned to the airport for a 4:40 am flight to Jo-burg (8 hr flight).
There were several amazing information exhibits - holograms?- that were very life-like.
Hot chocolate at the airport
O Tambo airport and Christmas decorations.
We stayed out by the airport but took a city tour - disappointing because the guide was very poor. The following images from the city tour.
Life imitating art or vice versa
This was in a small revitalized part of the city - an area of former manufacturing buildings turned into residences, art galleries, restaurants, clothing stores. This is a hotel lobby.
Street art.
Ghandi Square
Looking out over Houghton, an exclusive part of the city, to the north. The purple flowers are from the jacaranda trees. Jo-burg is a city of 6 million, with huge disparities in living conditions.

Wow, the jacaranda trees are so beautiful! Have you guys ever checked out any of Nadine Gordimer's novels? She was a Nobel Prize winning South African author & wrote a lot about apartheid...we had to read her in class once & I remember the book being fascinating.
